MANTOVA
About 40 km south of the famous destinations of Lake Garda and Verona, the city is somewhat ignored by most foreign visitors but it is worth visiting. Its ponds are formed by an extraordinary artificial fortification created almost 1,000 years ago that actually closed Mantova from the world. The place has not been touched by urban developments and even the current population of around 48,000 is practically the same as it was centuries ago. The Italian ecological movement Legambiente voted Mantova as the most livable city in Italy some years ago, a place where time seems to have stopped.
